New laws for motorists in 2010
Motorists were greeted this morning with new laws, including those for impounded vehicles and one that increased the fee to renew driver's licenses.
"Due to the budget crunch in Sacramento, legislators have targeted motorists in a number of new laws that increase fees," said Alice Bisno with the Automobile Club of Southern California
The cost of new and renewed driver's licenses went from $28 to $31, according to the Automobile Club.
Other laws taking effect today:
• Front-seat video screens are now OK in a vehicle so long as they are arranged in a manner preventing drivers from viewing the screens.
• Drivers approaching a stationary emergency vehicle or tow truck with siren or emergency lights on can now, if safe, move into an available lane not immediately adjacent to the emergency vehicle or tow truck.
• Cities and counties can adopt local laws stating that if someone is arrested for using a vehicle to pick up a prostitute, that vehicle may be impounded for up to 30 days; the suspect must have been convicted within three years of the same offense.
Taking effect July 1:
• Convicted DUI offenders in Alameda, Los Angeles, Sacramento and Tulare counties must install ignition interlock devices on every vehicle they own or operate in order to keep their driver's licenses. The amount of time the device needs to remain installed is based upon the number of DUI convictions. The devices require motorists to blow into them before the vehicles will start.
